Excelling in the field of law for over 35 years, Mr. Hemingway is currently retired, having gained the title of Eugene Kuntz professor emeritus from the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK, in 1992. Prior to this appointment, he served as the a Eugene Kuntz professor of oil, gas and natural resources law at the University of Oklahoma for nearly a decade, having previously held the role of professor of law at the university from 1981 to 1983. Spending over a decade with the School of Law at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX, he first joined the university as a professor of law in 1968. Becoming a Paul W. Horn professor in 1972, Mr. Hemingway was also active as acting dean of the School of Law from 1974 to 1975 and as dean ad interim from 1980 until he left Texas Tech University in 1981.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Hemingway worked as a visiting associate professor at the Dedman School of Law at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX, from 1965 to 1968 and an associate professor of law at the Law School of Baylor University in Waco, TX, from 1960 to 1965. Beginning his career as an associate at Fulbright, Crooker, Freeman, Bates & Jaworski, now known as Norton Rose Fulbright US LLP, in Houston, TX, from 1955 to 1960, he entered the field of education in 1960 as a lecturer at the University of Houston Law Center.
Prior to embarking on his illustrious career, Mr. Hemingway pursued an education at the University of Colorado, where he received a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1950. Graduating from Southern Methodist University at the top of his class, he earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence, magna cum laude, in 1955. To this day, Mr. Hemingway considers this the absolute highlight of his career. Concluding his studies with a Master of Laws from the University of Michigan in 1969, he was licensed to practice law by the Texas State Bar in 1955 and the Oklahoma State Bar in 1981.
In addition to his primary career responsibilities, Mr. Hemingway has been a contributing editor to various law reports, cases and materials, as well as the author of two books. Publishing “The Law of Oil and Gas” in 1971, his second book, “West’s Texas Forms (Mines and Minerals),” was released six years later in 1977. A William S. Cook fellow in 1968, Mr. Hemingway is also notable for his service with the United States Air Force from 1945 to 1947.
In an effort to remain abreast of developments in his field, Mr. Hemingway maintains affiliation with a number of professional organizations, including the Texas Bar Association, the Order of the Coif and Scribes, The American Society of Legal Writers. Elected to Beta Gamma Sigma, The International Business Honor Society, for his excellence, he has been further recognized throughout his career with multiple honors and accolades. Presented with the J. Woodall Rogers Senior Gold Medal in 1955 just as his career was beginning, he was also honored with an Outstanding Professor Award in 1992 not long before his retirement. In light of all his accomplishments, Mr. Hemingway has previously been featured in Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, and Who’s Who in the World.
